Bisons|Yellowstone| 27th Sept 2020

.

The below video captures a herd of bison’s gracing at Hayden Valley in Yellowstone. There were several hundred of them ranging from small calf’s to older adults in Hayden valley. The nearest bison was just 25 feet away from where I was recording the video. Visitors to the park are advised not to get too close to these massive animals as they can charge any moment. The recommended distance by the national park services is to maintain a distance of 23 meters as they are wild and unpredictable. Bisons can be aggressive when they are agitated. The bisons in the video continued eating the grass ignoring all the tourist awed at the sighting so many bisons at the valley.

Bisons are prehistoric animals that was roaming freely in the Midwest when the Europeans discovered the Americas and is the largest land mammal found in North America. But their number dwindled rapidly as the bisons were hunted for meat and killed by poachers. The numbers became near extinct that US Army was assigned to look after the remaining herd from the poachers.

Yellowstone is the only place Bisons are roaming free as they did before the arrival of the Europeans and continue to live in the park since the prehistoric time. The bison herds at Yellowstone are the largest free ranging population living on a federal land since the prehistoric times. Yellowstone has a bison population exceeding 4000 and the park services control the population based on the park capacity. Yellowstone helped in conservation and reviving the population to the present numbers.

Bisons are an integral part of the Indian tribes and since lately the park services release the excess bison in the park to Indian tribes to be raised in Indian reservations. In addition, there are bisons living in ranchers under private ownership.
